Abstract

As the climate change scenarios of future decades harshen, the building and architectural sectors will be forced to face an increasingly worrisome condition of hot, desertic or tropical environment. In order to confront with this new challenge, an effort towards the empowerment of cost minimizing strategies for the indoor environmental comfort will be required. Starting from the analysis of the passive cooling system of windcatchers, whose use is widely spread in North African and Middle East regions, this paper desumes crucial features, calculation and design methodologies and identifies some possible paths for research and development in orded to integrate this technology in the future European environmental context. The case study of the post 1908 earthquake housing constructions in the city of Messina, in Sicily, highlights interesting opportunities regarding the modernization and the adoption of windcatchers inside the existing urban environment and within masonry and reinforced concrete structures.
