Abstract

Historical portals of the Salé medina in Morocco are non-renewable resources. Their uniqueness lies in their history, architecture, materials and socio-cultural values. Unfortunately, they have been neglected to the detriment of urban development and suffer from several deteriorations that threaten their existence. Several restorations have been undertaken, but the results have failed to enhance this heritage. The aim of this study is to establish a restoration strategy for these historical portals using multi-criteria decision-making methods. This strategy is a statistical assessment that helps decision-makers select portals before starting restoration activity. It is based on portals diagnostics, material testing, stakeholder judgements and multi-criteria decision-support methods. The latter take into consideration several criteria, such as the historical, architectural, socio-cultural values and the conservation status of monuments. This evaluation revealed the main criterion influencing values of these portals and gives a priority ranking for the conservation of these monuments according to their final weight. The final result is a conservation strategy for the portals of Salé.
