CLIMATE CHANGES, ADAPTATION, CONSTRUCTION

Climate change has had a strong impact on rainfall trends and has tended to create extreme phenomena, altering the normal state of affairs both quantitatively and temporally. The number of areas affected by long periods of drought and extraordinary but irregular rainfall intensity are growing.
These new conditions, which are worsening, have created extensive damage to agricultural production and settlements, reducing the productivity of large areas of the planet and creating difficulties for a large number of communities. A new relationship with water is required. A relationship which has long been wished for but which perhaps now is absolutely necessary.
The two areas of intervention, reducing emissions and adapting activities and transformations to changing conditions, become an inalienable stimulus to direct the construction sector towards differentiated construction methods based on a consideration of the characteristics of places and knowledge of the phenomena which occur in these places.
Such a consideration would indicate that settlements and buildings be designed in a less inept and uniform manner than has been the case in recent centuries.
