Abstract

Improving energy efficiency has become a major challenge in the building sector. Vernacular architecture has never ceased to inspire designers, in especially the verticolateral cave dwellings of south-eastern Tunisia. We propose, first, to identify the architectural characteristics of these houses. This part is approached through the historical and the insitu observation method. Then, we want to reveal their thermal performance by interpreting the air temperature and relative humidity measurements made by Golany and Krarti. They used, respectively, the psychrometer and the sensor and data acquisition system.
The vertico-lateral troglodyte dwellings are entirely dug into the ground. The experimental method and the survey showed that these dwellings are, throuhout yhe year, at a comfortable temperature. Thermal comfort is ensured thanks to the strong inertia of the earth.
The homes studied are thermally efficient. However, they are currently abandoned and replaced by built dwellings.
