Abstract

In order to mitigate the effects of climate change, it is deemed necessary to reduce harmful gases and promote energy conservation. The building sector has a key role in its risks and impacts, as buildings have high energy consumption and emit a large percentage of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. To achieve energy savings and limit the use of fossil fuels, it is essential to minimize the amount of solar energy absorbed by buildings as well as reduce any heat loss. Doubtlessly, windows contribute significantly to energy consumption as they transfer a large amount of energy from the environment to the building and vice versa. However, in recent years, various technologies have been developed in the field of glazing, which help to avoid the overheating of a building while optimizing energy efficiency. In particular, the article describes a case study of an existing residence in Thessaloniki. The aim is to find the best alternative solution, through comparing the energy efficiency of different intelligent glazing in an existing space, in order to achieve balance between minimizing the rate of heat loss and preventing unwanted heating in summer. This comparison was performed with the help of a dynamic simulation tool.
