Introduction

In Sisley’s painting the landscape is mainly made up by the village of Villeneuve, which contains, as in all his works, both the concrete physical aspects of a place and the human ones that are inside and in the essence of the built and green areas. In a few words, the community. Community (i.e. “a group of people who share social life”1) is an extended concept that expresses different forms of aggregation. In the world of construction, a community first and foremost involves a connection between built bodies aimed at satisfying some users’ requirements. According to Steiner’s quotation, both the human and technical aspects are connected by a thread that binds them, and which requires the contribution of every single member of the community itself. A historic centre, a neighbourhood of a city, a small village constitute a community in which people act according to common objectives and social rules. In particular, SMC, which deals with sustainable construction, aims to underline how a social community can also work thanks to specific spatial-temporal relationships between built objects and therefore, as it is recognized both in architecture and in any other art of construction, depends on the quality, size and structure of the non-human portion of the community. Many architects have preferred to give priority to community issues rather than to the completion of egocentric or financial objectives, and have been able to propose technical-spatial solutions strongly affected by the desire to ease and make more pleasant and less uncomfortable life in their homes. As it is known, Alejandro Aravena in South America worked hard on social housing issues, but also in Italy many years earlier Giancarlo de Carlo developed social conscience as the main objective of his projects. For example in the Matteotti Village in Terni.
