Abstract

Ecological and sustainable materials are currently the preferred choice for building monuments, given their physical-mechanical, hygrothermal and acoustic characteristics. With this in mind, the aim of the present study is to characterize the rammed earth of the Salé medina ramparts. This is an ancient construction technique used before the 12th century. In the first step, we investigate the ramparts of the Salé medina to identify the location of this material and to collect samples for testing. In the second step, we characterize this rammed earth using physico-chemical tests to examine the microstructures and to determine its chemical composition. As a result, the main mineralogical composition of rammed earth shows the presence of calcite CaCO3 and quartz SiO2 wich are drived from the aggregate, clay and lime. The presence of magnesium, alumina and iron refers to the hydraulic nature of the lime used to stabilize this rammed earth. Rammed earth is a recyclable material characterized by low thermal conductivity, low CO2 emissions and low energy consumption. This study confirms the energy efficiency of rammed earth for buildings and provides an overview of its formulation.
