Abstract

The paper presents the first outcomes of the ongoing research project in collaboration with the Metropolitan City of Naples about the definition of a design process model for the integrated upgrading of higher education buildings. Masonry school premises represent 22 percent of the building stock managed by the Authority. The data analysis on their characteristics, integrated with information on the environmental context, indicates what level of compliance with user welfare, safety and energy-saving requirements can be achieved. Considerations about the construction of an original integrated survey model of a typical complex in load-bearing masonry are reported. By conducting simultaneous studies of its different aspects, we aim to better guide the design process of intervention. The contextual ways of analysing and reading the different data provide the useful platform to define a holistic approach toward the integrated school building upgrading project this research focuses.
