Abstract

Palermo, city-garden since its origins, has made green one of its most obvious expressions. The city preserves as in a casket, the most significant testimonies of the history of the green which occupies a decisive role from the environmental, historical and landscape point of view. The splendid parks of the Conca d’Oro that once embraced the city, are echoed by the wonderful private gardens hidden within noble palaces, churches and monasteries and public parks and villas, some of which have now been transformed into green spaces and urban vegetable gardens. The contribution exposes the results of a study conducted at the Department of Architecture of the University of Palermo, aimed at focusing on the evolutionary stages and the transformations generated by the anthropic intervention on the vegetation aspect of the territory, both in urban and extra-urban contexts, analyzes the environmental consequences linked to these and offers food for thought on the new urban scenarios, the result of a process regeneration aimed at improving outdoor environmental well-being.
