Economical, social and environmental issues make further consumption of agricultural land, meant to increase built areas, no longer sustainable. In Veneto the amount of built and un-built areas, abandoned or in decommission, is progressively increasing. This problem has grown to a critical size and we can no longer afford this waste, since land is a more and more meagre resource.
These topics have been dealt with in two research projects (ROP Veneto 2014-2020, funded by ESF) carried out at the University of Padova. The former, DATA_Developing Abandoned Transurban Areas (2017-2018) aimed to design sustainable future scenarios and develop ground-breaking strategies for the development and economic boost of jeopardized urban areas. The latter, iWRECKS_Industrial Wrecks: Reusing Enhancing aCKnowledging Sheds (2018-2019) aimed to provide innovative visions to professionals, entrepreneurs, investors and citizens coping with the reuse, enhancement and acknowledgment of abandoned industrial buildings.
