Sustainable Mediterranean Construction
In the context of the urgent needs of the ecological transition and the necessity of a radical change in the current urban developing model, the limitation of land consumption is gaining more and more importance. The paper focuses on the French experience with regard to the fight against land consumption and new urban expansions, starting from the intense, ongoing debate about the ultimate big challenge in this field, the “Zéro artificialisation nette” (ZAN) target, introduced in 2018’s Plan biodiversité.
The first part of the paper talks about the legislative evolution over the last 20 years of the land consumption’s containment and it dwells on certain crucial questions and issues around the current debate about the ZAN target.
The second part illustrates some current urban experiences that are particularly meaningful and innovative, given the awareness about what the achievement of the ZAN target implies in terms of radical changes in building cities and their evolution; in some cases, they can be considered first fruits, in others seeds of the transformation in new ways of building circular cities and territories.
