Abstract

Since ninth century, and since the Arab-Muslim presence on the island of Sicily under the regime of the Aghlabid state, followed by the Fatimid and Norman period, Italy has experienced a wide dissemination of Arab- Muslim culture. Islamic architecture in Italy, founded in this period, reflects a strong interaction between Arab-Muslim culture and Western one. This specific architecture represents a masterpiece of human creative genius and a cultural bridge between the two shores of the Mediterranean. This Arab-Muslim heritage is endowed with a particular design and specific characters. On the one hand, they make a stylistic continuity with the architectural heritage of the Arab-Muslim world. On the other hand they make a perfect integration into the local Italian landscape. Given the importance of this Arab-Muslim heritage, this paper aims to extract the specific characters of this medieval architecture in Palermo for starting a path of valorization of this heritage.
