Sustainable Mediterranean Construction
The article analyses the role of representation in the definition of maps of the built environment and human activities, and in the translation of multidisciplinary data sets into information, and therefore into knowledge. By analysing the symbolic and graphic structures of the maps produced in different areas, we focus on the visual effectiveness of the systems adopted. Starting from a series of studies on visualization and on the transfer of information from the verbal to the visual field, the character of the most recent modes of representation is discussed and highlighted. These representations understood as cognitive systems capable of allowing reflections on spatial processes and phenomena make it possible to influence anthropic and natural space modifications. And, especially concerning complex territorial realities such as those of the Mediterranean, they offer the possibility to manage more effectively integrated data and information of various kinds and to intervene more sustainably on urban space and anthropogenic landscapes.
