Abstract

The Street is one of the most important urban elements. It is plagued by numerous issues, particularly traditional streets in historic city centers, which are at risk of losing their heritage value. The need to preserve traditional streets is becoming increasingly important. It is critical to use urban sustainability in preservation and redevelopment. There is a clear need for indicators to evaluate local sustainability, yet at current there is a lack of both research and methods which can be applied successfully at a local level in traditional streets. The purpose of this research is to propose a method for evaluating neighborhood sustainability indicators on conventional streets. This approach will be used by the local government as a guide and tool for long-term redevelopment and preservation. Al-Imam Ali Street in the historic district of Hilla, Iraq, is used as a case study to assess the effectiveness of the approach. As a result, it provides a diverse set of applicable sustainable indicators for achieving long-term conservation.
