Sustainable Mediterranean Construction
This article investigates how architecture can address spatial stigma through a design approach centred on dignity, understood as the recognition of the intrinsic value of individuals and communities. The research examines how urban configurations may reinforce marginalisation, perpetuating exclusion and structural inequalities. The focus is on the potential of design to transform stigmatised spaces, addressing not only physical challenges but also the narratives that confine certain areas and populations to social invisibility. Through participatory design practices that prioritise the everyday experiences of inhabitants, architecture is presented as a tool to foster inclusion, social cohesion, and new opportunities. In this context, design transcends the creation of physical spaces to become a political act, reflecting and reshaping power relations within society while elevating dignity as a foundational principle.
