Abstract

Every act of architecture is inherently political, especially concerning public architecture for the collective good. Architectural design is never neutral: it involves political, ethical, and moral decisions. Architects must once again take on the political and social responsibilities of their projects. The ongoing research presented here, involving various contexts and stakeholders, brings space, quality, and role back into focus, initiating a renewed sense of responsibility within architecture towards its intrinsic themes and contexts. This approach addresses the transformation of places and the environment in response to human needs. The actions outlined in this research aim to shift from the “right to space”, understood as identifying spaces suitable for the needs of the incarcerated and the ill, to the “space of rights”, which focuses on defining the quality of these spaces to ensure the protection of the rights of individuals in vulnerable situations. Through exploratory projects applied to emblematic case studies, the research develops a framework of operational, and strategic actions aimed at adapting, improving, and enhancing the quality and functionality of detention spaces.
