Clay bricks, used for thousands of years, are an essential building material. However, in the face of new environmental and economic demands, more sustainable alternatives are emerging. This article reviews current research into the integration of plant biomaterials, organic residues, thermally-derived by-products and carbonaceous materials in the manufacture of clay bricks. The incorporation of these materials, can significantly improve the mechanical, thermal and acoustic properties of bricks. Indeed, these residues are renewable and biodegradable, and their addition can reduce the density of bricks while preserving their strength. This process thus offers potential advantages, such as better insulation and lower production costs. However, challenges remain, not least the variability of material properties. Future prospects for the use of these materials in sustainable construction underline the need for in-depth research and standardization of practices to maximize environmental benefits.
